History

Founded in 1898: The Calcasieu Parish Medical Society (CPMS) was established as a professional organization dedicated to advancing the medical field and supporting physicians in the area.

Early Advocacy: In 1908, CPMS, in collaboration with the Louisiana State Medical Society, played a crucial role in passing the Medical Practice Act. This act facilitated the creation of the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME), responsible for licensing medical practitioners and ensuring high standards in the profession.

Ongoing Commitment: Throughout its history, CPMS has remained steadfast in its dedication to safe, high-quality, and responsible medical practice, continually working to uphold these standards for the benefit of both physicians and patients.

Historical Shifts

Past: 20 years ago, physicians primarily operated as self-employed professionals in small, independent practices. The healthcare landscape was characterized by individual practice management and a direct physician-patient relationship.

Present: The majority of physicians now work within large medical groups or hold salaried positions with hospitals and corporations. This shift reflects broader changes in the healthcare system, including increased consolidation and a focus on integrated care models.

Adapting to Change

Both physicians and medical societies must continuously adapt to remain relevant in this evolving landscape. This includes embracing new healthcare delivery models, navigating changes in healthcare policies, and addressing the challenges posed by these transformations.

Enduring Principles

Physician-Patient Relationship: The core of medical care remains the professional relationship between physicians and their patients. This relationship is fundamental to effective treatment and patient satisfaction.

Communication: Effective communication among physicians is more critical than ever. It ensures coordinated care, enhances patient outcomes, and fosters a collaborative work environment.

Trust: Maintaining and upholding trust within the medical profession and the broader healthcare community is essential for delivering high-quality care. A trustworthy physician is committed to safeguarding this trust and upholding the integrity of the profession.
